Cancer in Older Adults: Understanding the Risks and Realities

Many believe that cancer becomes less aggressive with age — but this is a misconception. While the likelihood of developing cancer increases with age, the severity of the disease is determined by far more than a person's birth date.

Cancer develops when abnormal cells grow and divide uncontrollably. Under normal circumstances, the body regulates cell division and repairs damaged DNA. When these systems fail, a mass of cells — a tumor — can form. Tumors are considered benign if they do not invade surrounding tissue. Malignant tumors, however, have the potential to spread to other parts of the body, making them more dangerous.

Why is cancer more common in older adults?

Statistics show that a significant portion of cancer diagnoses occur in individuals over 70. As we age, our immune system weakens, and the body's ability to detect and eliminate abnormal cells declines. Additionally, the mechanisms responsible for DNA repair and cell regulation become less efficient, increasing the risk of cellular changes that lead to cancer.

Is cancer less aggressive with age?

Not necessarily. The aggressiveness of a tumor depends on its biology, not the age of the patient. For example, breast cancer in younger women often behaves more aggressively than in older women due to specific genetic traits. In lung cancer, certain genetic tests can now predict how invasive a tumor may become — independent of the patient’s age.

Some older patients tolerate cancer treatments well, while others do not — just as this variability exists in younger individuals. Age alone is not a reliable indicator of how someone will respond to the disease or its treatments. What matters more is the individual's overall health, the specific type of cancer, and its stage at diagnosis.

A personalized approach to care

Advancements in genetic research now make it possible to better understand how different cancers behave. This has led to more targeted and effective treatment strategies. In modern oncology, decisions are no longer based solely on chronological age but on a comprehensive evaluation of each patient’s condition.

In summary, while cancer is more prevalent in older adults, it is incorrect to assume it is less aggressive. Each case must be assessed individually, with personalized care and treatment plans that take into account the person — not just the number of candles on their birthday cake.
