Why Are Seniors Turning Away from Nursing Homes?

Why are nursing homes losing appeal among seniors?

Nursing homes in France and Belgium are facing declining occupancy rates. Many older adults are rethinking traditional care settings and leaning towards more flexible living solutions. What explains this shift, and what options are emerging to better meet the needs of today's seniors?

Understanding what a nursing home really is

It’s important to distinguish a nursing home from a retirement home. While retirement homes generally offer a communal living space for older adults with minimal care needs, nursing homes are healthcare facilities. They provide medical attention and rehabilitation to seniors dealing with complex health conditions. In France, there are over 6,000 such facilities, and the average admission age is 85. However, eligibility is based on health status rather than age. Despite a large number of potential residents in 2015, recent years have seen a growing reluctance among seniors. In Belgium, for instance, around 10,000 nursing home beds were left unoccupied in 2020.

What drives seniors away from nursing homes?

Reports of poor care conditions, overworked staff, and emotional neglect have shaped public perception over the years. Many seniors now associate nursing homes with feelings of isolation and distress. In both France and Belgium, the lack of adequate staffing and funding is a recurring issue. This results in rushed care, medication errors, and insufficient emotional support. Residents often describe an environment that can feel heavy and disheartening, especially for those on the path to recovery. Being surrounded by others in distress can be emotionally taxing, leading many seniors to prefer alternatives that preserve their dignity and autonomy.

COVID-19: A major turning point

The arrival of COVID-19 deeply affected the nursing home sector. In Belgium alone, the virus claimed the lives of more than 6,000 residents. Such figures intensified fears among older adults, many of whom began to favor staying at home, close to loved ones. As hospital stays became shorter, more patients were transferred to nursing homes—often including individuals with mental health needs. Unfortunately, caregivers in these facilities are not always trained to provide this type of specialized care. Even with vaccination efforts and eased restrictions, the image of nursing homes remains fragile in the eyes of many seniors.

What alternatives are available for seniors?

Though nursing homes are still an option for individuals with significant care needs, many seniors are now exploring more personalized solutions:

  • Ageing in place: Staying at home with the help of home care services is an increasingly popular option. Seniors can receive support with daily tasks, medical treatments, physiotherapy, or household chores.
  • Intergenerational living: Older adults share their home with a younger person, often a student, who assists with basic tasks and provides companionship in exchange for affordable rent.
  • Senior co-housing: Seniors can also choose to live together in a shared space. This solution promotes social interaction while allowing each person to retain their independence.

Each option should be assessed based on the individual’s health, preferences, and support needs. The goal remains the same: to ensure a safe, fulfilling, and respectful living environment for every senior.
